Em 1798, um menino selvagem é encontrado nos arredores da cidade de Aveyron, em França. Diagnosticado com deficiência mental, é internado num manicómio. Um jovem médico chamado Jean Itard convence-se de que o menino tem capacidade mental normal, mas que o seu desenvolvimento foi prejudicado pela falta de contacto com a sociedade. Assim, Itard leva o menino para casa e inicia uma árdua tentativa de educação ao longo de vários anos.
